Youth Program
Young Community Leaders Program
The Young Community Leaders Youth Program was created at the Korean Community Center of the East Bay after the 1992 Los Angeles Uprising when it became evident that there was a lack of leadership in the Korean American community. Young Community Leaders (YCL) is a program to train the next generation of Korean Americans on issues affecting our community and equipping them with the tools necessary to address these problems. YCL is comprised of Korean American high school students who prepare, plan and lead community based social activism, youth development training and cultural art projects. YCL teach workshops to a larger group of high school students that make up the Korean American Youth Alliance (KAYA).
KAYA
KAYA is a separate youth program that is completely led and planned by the YCL interns. The youth leaders administer workshops on different topics ranging from community organizing, leadership, and public speaking with the commitment to educate and dialogue with youth. Additionally, interns lead workshops on current social and political issues such as sweatshops, comfort women, racism, sexism, anti-violence and classism. The Korean American Youth Alliance believes in elevating the voices and ideas of youth.
