Social Service Program

Many Korean seniors and recent immigrants inevitably have difficulty with English and consequently are made to feel marginalized in their new social environment. Daily concerns such as finding and securing affordable housing, buying food, reading mail, and communicating with their social worker compel them to seek help from KCCEB.

For these seniors and recent immigrants, KCCEB's Social Services Program provides valuable information and much needed support and assistance for their daily lives. In the last year, the Social Services Program provided for over 3000 units of information and referral services to over 750 individuals and families in Alameda, Contra Costa, Sonoma, Santa Clara, and San Francisco counties. Services include assistance with: MediCal and Medicare; SSA, SSI, CAPI; CalWORKs and GA; food stamps; senior housing; Affordable Housing; in-home supportive services; interpretation and translation; and Healthy Families; AIM; WIC. Through this program, many have also gained access to services and information in the following areas: low-income housing, home energy and telephone bill assistance, employment opportunities, and volunteer training.

Focusing on the most vulnerable segments of the Korean immigrant community, the program also strives to help clients become more self-reliant. In recent years, the program has played an important role in the development of the Virtual Village Program, a decentralized service delivery network for members of the Korean American community to access services in their neighborhood. Also starting this year, seniors that have received benefits began giving back to the community by volunteering to show their appreciation.
